The Aidan Threlfall Painting Award 2012 gave me the opportunity to further develop my research into Seventeenth century Netherlandish ‘Forest Floor’ painting and painting practice. During my trip to the Netherlands I made visits to Galleries and Museums and explored the forests and woodlands, which are likely to have been the subjects of Otto Marseus van Schrieck’s paintings.

I find the work of Otto Marseus van Schrieck (1619 Nijmegen-1678 Amsterdam,) ‘inventor’ of the ‘Sottobosco’/Forest Floor genre compelling stylistically and conceptually. The genre has been the focal point for much of my practice during my MA study, though my interest in Seventeenth century painting developed over three years previous to this.
