Clemency Bathurst

The Aidan Threlfall Award took me to South America where I was able to extend my stay for almost a year by volunteering in each of the countries I visited. I worked in a wildlife sanctuary, in a primary school and in a language school for travellers. I filled my sketchbook with everything that I encountered, from the rescued Ocelot I worked with at the sanctuary in Bolivia, to the otherworldly flora and fauna of the Rupununi wilderness in Guyana, and the bright costumes and fabulous wares of busy markets in Colombia and Ecuador. The time I spent in South America was an amazing, visually stimulating experience, and has provided me with a wealth of material to work from in the future.
